Headed Down Under!

Australia, here we come!

We had to cancel our planned river cruise in the fall, but our friends Norm and Barb went without us. They had a wonderful time in Germany and France, with a side trip to London, but the weather was not the greatest. Oh, well, we will be on a river cruise at the end of May that visits many of the same towns and cities, so we will be able to benefit from their experience - with some warmth and sunshine added to the mix, we hope.

We're just about finished packing for our three weeks in Australia. We will have a few days in Sydney to start with on our own, then we will fly to Melbourne to join the Tauck tour, where we will also visit Ayers Rock, or Uluru, in the centre of the country, and the Great Barrier Reef at Cairns. The tour ends in Sydney, so we will have a chance to really get to know the city.

We're planning a few day trips to give us some exposure to areas outside of the well-known downtown core and Rocks districts, but we're also going to make a point of visiting some of our favourite restaurants, like the Hofbrauhaus, THE authentic German spot in Sydney. Family owned and run, their schnitzel is almost as good as Monica's.

So far, we've had no success in getting Franklin to explore the suitcases. He's come close a couple of times, but this seems to be as good as it will get:

He's much more comfortable curled up on a chair beside the fireplace. Okay, we'll leave him alone for now. If anything changes tomorrow before we leave, we'll post an update.

As usual, we'll be posting photos of the interesting people, places and things we see along with our impressions and snippets of information. We hope you'll enjoy following along.
